I just don’t know what’s wrong with me lately. I can’t move as easily as I could before. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear I see a few gray hairs in my head—They shouldn’t be there, I’m only 19! Paul has even given me a old oaken walking stick to guide my steps.

Healer Pye calls me into his office. “MacMillan, I called you in to because I know you aren’t a wizarding supremacist. I was impressed with your adaptation of the Muggle sonogram.

“The next question I have, is how do you feel about squibs?”

I sit there thinking for a moment. I don’t know of any in my own family. The only one that comes to mind is Mr. Filch from Hogwarts. “Well sir, the only squib that I know of is Mr. Filch. With his personality, I didn’t like him much; not because he wasn’t that he wasn’t a wizard, just a unkind man,” I say.

“I am telling you a secret that not many people know. The one aspect of Wizarding society that crosses the magical/Muggle line most often is medical field. You have an opportunity to participate in a Muggle surgery.
We don’t have to worry about the Statute of Secrecy because three out of the five doctors are squibs. The rest of the surgical staff for this operation and the patient is relatives of Muggleborns. The patient is a 35 year old woman. As you know a pregnant mum and her child are an symbiotic organism. While the baby’s life is dependent on the mum’s health, the health of the baby can also affect the mum’s. The initial diagnosis is that the baby’s system is causing the mum’s systems to shut down. They have two options, treat the baby in utero, or abort the child. The mum feels that the child needs every opportunity to survive." He scrutinizes me carefully.

“Oi, MacMillan if you accept this challenge, grow a bit of a beard. Will you join me in two days time?” Healer Pye asks.

I feel my face pale and I say, “Yes, sir.”

Two days later, I report to Healer Pye. He explains to me that I will be the one that observes the baby. I am to make the initial diagnosis, but I can only cast two spells so that magic won’t affect the machinery, but I can use potions to treat the child since that works internally instead of environmentally.

Pye looks at my beard, “I wish it was a bit thicker. With a few passes of Pye’s wand it is. You can pass for a Muggle doctor now.

No need to go into the minutiae of the operation; compared to the magical ones I witnessed and assisted in, it's barbaric and very bloody. I will always remember one part of this operation. It is when the doctor opens up the uterus to remove the bairn for examination.

An arm reaches through the incision and grasps my finger. I feel as if I know what I am searching for. She has tiniest of fingernails and a few wisps of hairs beginning to grow on her head. When she is fully removed, she lays fully in the palm of my hand. After Healer Pye, the doctors, and I treat the wee lass, she is placed back into her mum and wound sealed.

The prognosis is good. I hope to witness the lass’ birth in four months time to see what changes happened as she grows.

I’ve come to one conclusion. While knowing how to do magical surgery is a useful emergency skill, I don’t want to do it often. It just doesn’t feel right to me but I’ll finish the program to get the knowledge.

Over the next couple of days, I've got to tell Susan and Hannah the miracle I've seen.
